[He gives a thoughtful look as he sips. Comparing the moment to the memories of it.]

[ She rolls her eyes. Same old Church. ]

[ And then she takes a swig of her drink. ]

[He watches with a faint smirk as one of the many memories that he's been constantly trying to put aside sneaks up on him.]

So, how bad was it your first time?

[ She snorts. ]

[ She pulls a face, one that he's likely to find unreadable. She'd been thinking about the year of parties on the alien planet, which was long after he'd disappeared.

She covers up her discomfort by taking another drink. Then she says flatly: ]

What, you want to know if I got drunk enough to fuck you?

[Not quite where he was going with that. But of course she has to jump to the most insulting conclusion.]

[ She rolls her eyes. The answer is 'yes', of course, yet she's glad to know that's not what he was pressing for. That doesn't mean she's not irritated. ]

Okay, fine, I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions.

[She's irritated and he's insulted... He bites back his own retaliatory insulting question.]

[He grabs the last couple of cinnamon bites. Literally keeping his mouth occupied with something other than saying something he'd regret.]

[ She remains silent, drinking her whiskey and cola with short sips.

Eventually she speaks, having found a new topic to broach. ]

Where are you staying?

[He takes a breath before answering.]

Someplace called the Proxy Hotel. Got stuck with a big lizard for a roomie. But I haven't seen him in a few days.

[He taps his fingers on the side of his glass.]

What about you? Did you win the roommate lottery?

I'm in a dorm building called the Qubit House. My roommate's okay. It's not too different from living in barracks, so I don't mind.

[ Not that she ever actually did that. Church isn't the only one who identifies with those old memories. ]

I dodged a bullet with Caboose.... Probably the only bullet I dodged with him.

Did you guys have barracks? A bunch of Freelancers trying to share a space... that must have suuucked.

No, not in Freelancer. Or at least, I had a room to myself. They had to convince me I was sleeping and everything, after all.

Do you ever find the memories- I don't know... useful? Like, maybe it helped you get used to things faster...
